Its compact size, high output, extended runtime, and its Strike Bezel make the 6PX Defender a great choice for personal protection, but it's also perfect for tactical applications, the great outdoors, and ideal as an everyday carry light.

Japanese View of the Second World War

!±8± Japanese View of the Second World War

Nations, culture and what we are told act as kinds of lenses that greatly influence how we see events. We can gain a better appreciation of this by looking at how people from other cultures look at the same events in history and the world today.

When working in Japan a few years back, I had a class of three more elderly students. The conversation at one point got to World War 2 and their experiences. While of course they were all young Japanese at the time, they had very different backgrounds.

One was a female university student. When I asked her how she felt when she found out the war was over, she said "very sad." When I asked why, she explained that she could not believe Japan had lost!

Then there was another woman who was in high school at the time. She said her reaction to the war ending was of fear because they had been told Americans were like animals. She also said that her parents gave her pills to take in case US soldiers came for her. I did not know the word for the pills at the time, but from the sound of it, I thought it had something to do with birth control. However, when I looked the word up, it was potassium cyanide!

The third student was a male who was in the Japanese Army manning anti-aircraft guns at the time. His reaction was very different though. He said he was overjoyed and felt saved. He said he liked to watch American movies before the war and never believed the propaganda dished out by the Japanese government at the time.

This is obviously not a scientific sample of public opinion in Japan at the end of the war (do not think any were ever taken), but from what I have read of from Japan during the war, it seems like the majority supported the government line until the end as most of those I talked to had.

Of course, the Japanese with their kamikaze attacks, mass suicides and other actions during the war were regarded as especially fanatical. However, there were plenty of Germans fanatically devoted to Hitler and Soviets dedicated to Stalin. Were they really that different? For example, many soldiers in the Soviet Army died in the most suicidal attacks launched without the least regard for the lives of the soldiers.

In more recent years, I have found many Japanese very shocked when told that the US military service was voluntary and those in Iraq were essentially volunteers. They seem to regard dying in Iraq just as senseless as Americans regarded dying in a kamikaze attacks.

Obviously, there are just and unjust causes in the world and sacrificing for the right ones can be good. However, the world would probably be a better place if people, particularity in times of war, tried to look at their own actions from the eyes of those outside their world.

M3LT-SA large-diameter Turbohead, a Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens, and an ultra high-output 4-die LED emitter come together to produce a powerful, focused beam suitable for spotlight/searchlight applications-yet the light is less than 9 inches long. The high-performance 4-die LED is virtually immune to failure since there is no filament to burn out or break, and it provides a far longer runtime per set of batteries when compared to incandescent lights of similar lumen output. This model includes an ultra high-output strobe mode for special tactical applications or for signaling purposes. It comes standard with a high-strength aerospace aluminum body with a Mil-Spec hard-anodized finish for extreme durability. Also features an ergonomic CombatGrip configuration suited for flashlight/handgun techniques and provides a secure hold with cold, wet, or gloved hands. The M3LT-S features tactical switching- a pushbutton switch that (1) is located on the tailcap for fast, no-look access and for use with flashlight/handgun techniques, (2) always activates maximum light output when fully depressed, and (3) activates the strobe when pressed rapidly three times.Strobe WarningExposure to strobing lights may cause dizziness, disorientation, and nausea. A very small percentage of people suffer from photosensitive epilepsy-approximately .00025% of the population-and may experience seizures or blackouts triggered by strobing lights. Visit www.epilepsyfoundation.org for more information about this rare form of epilepsy. Anyone who has had symptoms linked to this condition should consult a doctor before using this product.

!±8± Top 30 Fun Sight Word Games and Activities

Learning sight words is an important part of learning to read.

Sight words are service words. They are not meant to be sounded out. Learning these words helps the reader to maintain reading fluency without getting caught up on meaning.

I like the Dolch Sight Word List, but there are many other lists available. I like to pop them onto cards about 12cm x 6cm.

Use these cards to have some fun with 30 FUN SIGHT WORD GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

1. Play Battleships with sight words on a grid with a partner or
as a class.

2. Play coin toss - words on floor - children take turns to
toss a coin onto a word and say that word.

3. Have a box of small blank mini cards or paper you can
purchase great sized post it notes these days (approx
10cm x 2 cm) on hand at all times so that children can
write down words from word walls, charts etc and then
take the card back to their writing. It is also handy to
write words on when doing writing conferences.

4. Play who am I? for example, I am yellow, I have 5 letters, and I
end in ___.

5. Make a letter twister chart with chalk on a concrete
floor, children place their feet and hands on the letters
to spell words.

6. Around the World Sight Words - flash a word - first player
to say word out of that pair moves on to the next person
to make a pair and another word is flashed, etc, etc.

7. Play Hangman using the word card words.

8. How quickly can you find a certain sight word in individual
reading books during small group reading.

9. Play dominoes using same end letter/ beginning letter.

10. Circle letters within words using white board marker on
laminated sight words cards.

photocopied small sight words and scrapbooks labeled with a
letter of the alphabet on each page... can be added to
throughout the year.

18. Play tic tac toe, here I go, where I stop I do not know -
children say the word that you stop on.

19. Cloze - children find the missing word
within a sentence.

20. Play musical words - children pass words around in a
circle until music stops - that child says the word - can
be played with 1 or more words.

21. Go on a word walk / drive - find words around the environment -
signs etc.

22. Make words using play dough.

The Development of Flashlights

!±8± The Development of Flashlights

Flashlights were originally invented by Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1898, but he did not intend it to be a portable lighting device. Instead, Cowen meant his design to be sold as decorative lighting to go with potted plants. Cowen met with no commercial success and ultimately sold his company to Conrad Hubert.

Hubert hired an inventor to use Cowen's design to create what is known today as the flashlight or electric torch. In order to begin marketing this new product, Hubert gave these them out to police officers in New York City to be used on the job. These flashlights were very different from the ones we use today. They could only be used in short bursts of light due to poor power elements and the inability to sustain current. In fact, this inability to keep up a beam of light is where the name flashlight actually came from!

The first flashlights used incandescent light bulbs, and many lights on the market today still use this type of lighting. One of the most popular brands of incandescent flashlights is Maglite, which provides a high-powered light beam with many of its products. Of course, there are always those who want more than is available, and it is a common pastime among flashlight enthusiasts to replace the light sources or other parts in these products with items that will produce a much more powerful light beam.

In addition to incandescent bulb, the modern age has brought us many more ways to create light. Probably the next most popular light source among flashlights these days is the LED light. LED stands for light-emitting diodes. The first LED flashlight was put on the market in 2001, and since LED lighting is much more efficient than incandescent, many manufacturers have been producing LED flashlights since then. Besides a longer battery life, LED lights also have the benefit of being tougher than regular incandescent lighting, making them an obvious choice for manufacturers that want to produce durable products. For people that need a flashlight that can take a beating, LED lighting is a great option, and can be found in brands such as Maglite, Surefire, and Pelican.

Another lighting source that has been developed in recent years is the high intensity discharge bulb, or HID. An example of this type of bulb can be found in the Surefire Hellfire Weaponlight. An HID bulb is very shock resistant and incredibly bright. In fact, the 3000 lumens generated by the Hellfire Weaponlight can light up targets several football fields away! HID lighting has not yet made a big impact on consumer flashlights, however, because they are expensive and require large power sources, making them less portable that the standard handheld flashlights.

In addition to standard, commercial flashlights such as Maglite, there is also an entire market dedicated to high-end flashlights. These manufacturers provide specialty lights that are made from special materials, are waterproof, and provide a brightness that far surpasses that of the standard flashlight. These products are designed with specific uses or collectability in mind, and can range in price from just over one hundred dollars to several hundred dollars! Some examples of high-end lights include Streamline's HID Litebox, which is a search light with a candlepower of one million, and Surefire's M6 Guardian, which is often used by police as a tactical light. These types of lights are often collected and traded by flashlight enthusiast worldwide. In fact, there is even an Annual Flashlight Convention, and several museums dedicated entirely to flashlights!

As flashlight technology developed over the years, inventive people came up with more and more ways to use this product, which means that more and more types of flashlights were created. For example, years ago, someone came up with the idea to attach lights to helmets to be used in mining, and more recently, tool companies started designing smaller lights that could be strapped over the head for hands-free working. In the past century, craftsmen have seen lights that hang, lights that can be attached to the wall or working space, and lights with flexible cylinders which can be wrapped around bars or other things. In the very beginning of flashlight development, the lights reflected the times, and some of them even looked just like lanterns. As you see how flashlights have changed over the years with culture and technology, you can only wonder what the next generation of lights will look like!
